A Prayer Shawl’s Journey: Connecting Support Across Miles

The Daughters of Wisdom’s prayer ministry is embraced not only by the Sisters of the congregation but also by the lay workforce, as they make requests and pray daily. So it wasn’t unusual that, when the prayer request went out, an email in response arrived within hours from Sr. Jackie Ayotte, DW.

She asked for an address when she heard about Lynn’s milestone in her battle with cancer and the celebratory bell ringing after her last round of chemotherapy. It didn’t take long, only 676 miles and 5 days later, when a hand-addressed package containing a prayer shawl from the Long Lake area of St. Agatha, Maine, arrived on the doorstep of her Bay Shore, Long Island home. Accompanied by a handwritten note from Sr. Jackie and a pocket prayer quilt tagged with words of encouragement reading “This “Pocket Prayer Quilt” was made especially for you to slip in your pocket when troubles arise. Hold me tight in your hand if it helps calm your fears and don’t be afraid to use me to wipe away your tears.”

Conceived and completed with prayer, and crafted to bring comfort, healing, and a sense of being loved to its recipient, Sr. Jackie wrote in her note, “This prayer shawl ministry allows us to reach out to the people we are praying for with a touchable item that reminds them of this reality.”  Sr. Jackie participates in the Prayer Shawl Ministry hosted at the Long Lake Public Library in St. Agatha, Maine.  

Even in difficult times, acts of kindness and faith—like the simple gesture of wrapping someone in a prayer shawl—can unite people and uplift their spirits. Hope and care, woven into the fabric of our lives, have the power to travel great distances and touch others in profound ways.

Lynn expressed deep gratitude for the Daughters of Wisdom, whose prayers accompanied her throughout her treatment. She found immense comfort in knowing that, with every row knitted into the prayer shawl, people many miles away were lifting her in prayer—a tangible reminder of support and love that she will cherish for years to come.
