Weeks after surgery, Sr. Sara joins Mexican Independence Day Festivities.

Just weeks after her own cardiac procedures, Sr. Sara Proctor, DW, 80, was right back out there, caring for the health needs of those in her community during its annual Mexican Independence Day celebration. Bringing the gift of health awareness, she and her colleague, Trisha, shared their expertise with attendees, speaking in both English and Spanish while taking blood pressure readings and offering healthcare advice.

This year marked the 216th anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain, which South Florida residents celebrated with traditional festivities of food, music, and dancing. This annual gathering has an expanded purpose, including the special health care component provided by BayCare Health System - St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Florida, and participation from local organizations and nonprofits that provide information and support for agricultural workers, education for children, and legal and housing assistance for women in abusive situations.

Despite the variety of services, far fewer families came to the fiesta this year because of heightened ICE activity in the area. Stories of husbands being taken from their cars and mothers being apprehended while bringing their children to school, with no chance of legal help,  conveyed the high level of concern in the community. But for those who did come, there was an opportunity to learn and benefit from the services being offered.

Farm workers received sunglasses to help prevent eye damage caused by the intense Florida sun. Young children received free bilingual books, and information about upcoming elections was available. Even local police came to support the event and took advantage of some services. Pictured is Sr. Sara providing a blood pressure test.
