Daughters of Wisdom Awards $10,000 Grant to Mission House
Daughters of Wisdom awarded a $10,000 Wisdom Grant to Mission House. They are a first-time Wisdom Grant recipient.
Mission House’s goal is to help people affected by homelessness back into self-sufficient lives. They primarily serve adult men and women, but also collaborate with community partners to support families. Their programs include a Crisis Care program that offers hot showers, a fresh change of clothes, phone access for program clients, and one-on-one case management. The Mission House Clinic provides health care services to residents who are uninsured.
Located in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Mission House has been the only day facility for the unhoused and uninsured in the area for 27 years. Their clinic provides primary care services to 300 patients a year, free of charge.
They were given $10,000 to purchase a dedicated food recovery vehicle to provide nutritious meals to unhoused clients. Their goals include providing 30,000 meals to the unhoused through their food recovery program and preventing edible food that’s near expiration from going into a landfill. They’re also aiming to provide 300 uninsured patients with healthy and nutritious food bags at clinic visits, with a total of 900 food bags being distributed over the course of a year.
“We plan to use the funding to purchase a passenger van that will be converted into a food recovery and street outreach vehicle for our Crisis Care program, which serves individuals experiencing homelessness in the Beaches region of Jacksonville,” said Director of Development, London Shell.
“We’re calling this new addition Mission House Mobile. Initially, it will increase our capacity to collect food and clothing donations.”
In 2026, they plan to use the van as a supplemental component to their already existing Crisis Care services. A Coordinated Entry Case Manager will use the Mission House Mobile for street outreach.
Mission House was recommended for a Wisdom Grant by Sr. Lucy Clynes, DW.
“I was pleased to support and recommend Mission House in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, for a Daughters of Wisdom Mission Grant. Started by several ecumenical parishes in the beach area, Mission House provides food and medical services to persons in need,” said Sr. Lucy.
“The collaboration with area hospitals has enabled the medical outreach to expand, and parishioners with medical backgrounds to generously offer their services. Helping in the purchase of a van to more easily pick up food from area stores will also expand services. These outreach expressions of support and attention to those on the margins reflect the mission of the Daughters of Wisdom.”
