Daughters of Wisdom Awards $15,000 Grant to Harmony Healthcare Long Island.

Harmony Healthcare’s team of doctors and nurses works out of six locations and offers care in adult/family medicine, dental, pediatrics, specialty services, women’s health, and WIC. Healthcare advocates worked for over two decades to provide care to underserved communities in Nassau County, and in 2009, they were named the first Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in the county.

In Nassau County, the maternal mortality rate for African American women is three times that of white women. Last year, Harmony Healthcare welcomed more than 350 babies. They will be using their grant to provide newborns with a box of necessities, giving them a chance to start life without disadvantages.

Their Baby Bundle will include necessary items like a bassinet and a pack 'n play or car seat. Black babies in Nassau County are more likely to die before their first birthday due to most being from the poorest communities — these are the communities Harmony Healthcare serves. They also work with the Long Island nonprofit Baby Essentials Long Island to make their Baby Bundles.

Harmony Healthcare has been a recipient of a Wisdom Grant in the past and was recommended for a 2025 grant by Sr. Evelyn Lamoureux.

“I know Harmony firsthand since I am on the board of directors. The organization provides health care for those who are poor and underserved,” said Sr. Evelyn.

“No one is turned away regardless of religion, immigrant status, or income level. There is a great need for this assistance in Nassau County, where the health centers are located.”

Harmony Healthcare’s Elmont location previously partnered with the Elmont Chamber of Commerce to honor community member and former editor of the Elmont Herald, Rita Mezzapelle, by dedicating a bench in her honor last April.
